Microsurgical varicocelectomy is a surgical procedure for treating enlarged veins in the scrotum, called varicoceles. Varicoceles are quite common in adult men, affecting no less than 15%. However, in most cases, they are harmless and go unnoticed and untreated. However, in some men, they can cause discomfort, pain, and even fertility issues which can be corrected by microsurgical varicocelectomy. This procedure involves using advanced microsurgical techniques to identify and ligate the affected veins, thereby improving blood flow and relieving symptoms.

Why Is Microsurgical Varicocelectomy Done?

  • Pain Relief: Varicoceles can cause a dull ache or sharp pain in the scrotum. The surgery aims to alleviate this discomfort and improve the quality of life.
  • Fertility Enhancement: Varicoceles are a known cause of male infertility. The treatment can help improve sperm quality and production, increasing the chances of successful conception.
  • Prevention of Testicular Atrophy: In some cases, varicoceles can lead to testicular atrophy, a condition where the testicle shrinks in size. Correcting the condition helps prevent this by improving blood circulation to the testicles.

How Is Microsurgical Varicocelectomy Done?

During the initial consultation, your andrologist will take your medical history and perform physical examinations to understand the extent or severity of the condition. Ultrasound scans can also help determine the necessity of the surgery and devise a proper surgical plan. The doctor may advise you to take or avoid certain medications for a while. On the day of the surgery, you will need to come after a certain period of fasting and wear comfortable clothes. The team will administer local anesthesia. So, you will remain awake but comfortable throughout the procedure. Microsurgical Varicocelectomy is typically performed under general or local anesthesia. The procedure involves the following steps:

  • A small incision is made in the lower abdomen or groin area to access the affected veins.
  • The surgeon uses a high-powered microscope to precisely identify and isolate the varicocele-affected veins.
  • These veins are carefully tied off to redirect blood flow away from the varicocele.
  • Once the veins are ligated, the incision is closed using sutures or surgical staples.
  • If there are no complications during the surgery, you will be discharged the same day.

Post-Operative Care

Take ample rest and limit physical straining and sexual activity for about a week. Take your painkillers and antibiotics religiously. Cold packs can help soothe any remnant discomfort. You can resume normal life in no more than 10 days.
